Old Schoolhouses in the Black Hills

There are many old schoolhouses in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Some of them have been saved and moved in town to be admired and part of the town’s history. Others have been left alone to diminish and deteriorate over time. Here are some of the ones I have discovered.

Glen Erin Schoolhouse

First schoolhouse built in the Black Hills.

Centennial School #11

Located in Lawrence County off Highway 85 just north of Deadwood.

Hillside School

Located in the town of Belle Fourche.

Ingersoll School

Located just east of Belle Fourche on Highway 212.

Cold Springs School

Located near Wind Cave National Park.

Galena Schoolhouse

Located in the town of Galena in Lawrence County.

Asbury Schoolhouse

Located in Lawrence county near Highway 34.

Old Schoolhouse On Wicksville Rd

Five miles north of I-90 on Wicksville Rd.

Galena Creek Schoolhouse

Located in Custer State Park by Legion Lake.

Maitland Schoolhouse off Highway 71 south of Hot Springs

Blair Schoolhouse across from Reptile Gardens off Neck Yoke Road.

Nemo Schoolhouse in the town of Nemo, west of Rapid City.

In the fall.

The old Wasta School that is in the town of Wasta by MM 98 I-90.

Keystone Schoolhouse in Keystone, South Dakota which is now a museum free and open to the public.

Old log schoolhouse at one time near the Keystone Victorian School/Museum now.

Sandstone School in Hot Springs, now a museum.

Pine Groove School is now a residential house and called Pine Groove Acres.

The old Fairview School at LH Road and Cobb Road. All that is left is a little foundation blocks. This is between Hermosa area and Custer State Park.

Old school building in Black Hawk now a home.

Oral Elementary School in the town of Oral served 20 students in grades K-8th grade and closed in 2008.

Rochford School- University and an old administration building in the town of Rochford - now a seasonal business that rents bikes??

Beulah Schoolhouse in Beulah, Wyoming - Black Hills of Wyoming.

Now fixed up and a town hall - beautifully done.

Old schoolhouse in the town of Vale, SD.

Aladdin, Wyoming - school now a community center.

On Pleasant Valley Road off Exit 37 I-90. Lots of no trespass signs on this one, so can only take a picture from the road.

In the town of Vivian at mile marker 214 I-90.

In Newcastle, Wyoming at the Anna Miller Museum.

In the town of Draper at mile marker 201 I-90 in Jones County.

Boulder Park Schoolhouse - looks redone and maybe a home now???

Located on Highway 14A in Boulder Canyon across from Apple Springs.

Old Stoney Schoolhouse now a museum in the Black Hills of Wyoming - Sundance.

Four Mile Old West Town And Museum - just west of the town of Custer.

Looks like an old schoolhouse in the Bear Butte area along Highway 34.

On Highway 24 south of Devil’s Tower in Wyoming - looks like an old schoolhouse fixed up and moved there.

On Highway 14 northwest of the town of Sundance, Wyoming. Looks like an old schoolhouse - now the Sunny Divide Community Hall.
