St. Elmo Peak
St Elmo Peak is a 1.8-mile out-and-back trail located near Hill City, South Dakota. It is a difficult and steep hike, ending with an elevation of 6397 feet. The trail takes you to an outcropping of rocks with an amazing view of Black Elk Peak and the surrounding area. The trail for the most part is easy to follow, but there are several misleading animal trails that can lead you astray. We got on one of these animal trails for a bit without knowing it, but eventually was able to get ourselves back on the main trail. The trail is hard going up, but just as hard going down. It is definitely worth it if you are up for the challenge.
S Highway 16/385 - parking lot.
Beginning of the trail does not look so bad.
Nice hiking sticks someone left - I recommend using them.
First road crossing. This is where we got on the animal trail crossing the road and taking that trail. Looks correct, but it isn’t.
After we crossed the road above, we got on a wrong trail shown above.
Followed the trail through the grass.
Getting some nice views.
We are not alone.
Second road crossing. We are back on the trail.
Looking to the northwest.
Nice view to the south.
Nice view to the west.
Cross the road and continue up the trail.
Starts to get more steep and more rocky.
First time you can see Black Elk Peak in the distance.
Rocks you have to climb over - getting close.
Final rocks before you reach the top.
On top - looking to the north at Black Elk Peak.

Looking to the Northwest.
I did it !!!
Climbing back down.
Interesting tree.
Going back down is hard on the knees.
One tree down and on the path.
The actual path is a little to the east on the first road, not straight across.
My car looks so inviting. Another peak done.
