Doran Trail

The Doran Trail is a little over 1.5 mile trail one way located in Custer State Park, South Dakota. The trail goes to a high point above Stockade Lake and gives you some amazing views. We parked at the Stockade Lake Dam and walked a little west to where the trail begins on the north side of the road. The trail then took us to the Gordon Stockade Historic Landmark where it ended just east of the town of Custer, South Dakota. From there you can visit the Gordon Stockade before you turn around and head back to your vehicle.

Start of the trail near Stockade Lake dam.

Part of the summer challenge for Custer State Park - 2026.

Lot of tree damage in the area from winds.

Not sure if this is a camping spot and who can use it.

Marked pretty good and pit toilet available.

Nice picnic shelter in the background.

Cross the road a couple of times on the trail.

Pretty area.

Stockade Lake Campground in the background.

Can see the lake.

What a gorgeous view.

We crossed the road and headed to Gordan Stockade.

Crane/Heron took off.

Crossed the bridge on the road.

We think the trail ended here.
