Curley Grimes Grave

Curley Grimes was a criminal who was caught by a posse and killed in Sturgis and buried at this location. His tombstone is now aged and hard to read but it says, “ Buried with his head down/just as he fell/the whispering pines/will never tell”. 1850-1879

Grimes was one of the highwaymen whose career at robbing the Deadwood Stage lasted about 2 years before he was caught. Rumors said he was part of the Doc Middleton Gang. Articles in the paper said he actually died February 3, 1880. He was shot dead trying to escape when he was being transported after being captured. The subjects that actually shot him were charged with murder and later aquitted.
