Battleship South Dakota Memorial

The USS South Dakota BB-57 was the lead vessel of the 4 South Dakota - class fast battleships built in the 1930s for the United States Navy. The ship saw extensive action during World War II and was in several battles in its short 5 years at sea. The battleship USS South Dakota BB-57 was decommissioned in 1947, and sold for scraps in 1962. Some of its components were sent to Sioux Falls to be part of the memorial - Battleship South Dakota. Other artifacts are displayed at the USSS South Dakota Memorial in Sioux Falls, and in locations such as Washington D.C. There is a museum on site which is open May 1 to September 30 9:30 to 5:30 pm. There are military memorial displays, historic displays, restrooms, and a gift shop. Museum admission is free.
